This past weekend I went to the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY. On display was a piece that grabbed my attention: a large display of spools of thread: 4,392 of them, to be exact (not that I counted).
From further away, it was clear they were carefully placed to create a design, and looking through a looking glass, which flipped the image, I saw “American Gothic”. I found it surprising, creative, and fun. It was a hit with kids who were previously bored in the museum.
The 2010 piece is entitled “After Grant Wood (American Gothic) 3” by Devorah Sperber and was commissioned by the Memorial Art Gallery.
